While at Duke Hospital today, I went with Nathan to visit Gwyneth. I had been in to see her Sunday evening and this morning, too. But this time I got to hold her for the first time! I wasn't expecting it. She knew exactly who I was.

Rick, from one grandparent to another! Awesome pictures and yes, what a surprise. My heart is so full for you & Gail. Judith
awwww, how cool
I can't believe you didn't make her cry like most babies when you hold them. :)
Yay!! Glad you got to hold Gwyn for the first time and here's to many more! :-) You and Gwyn look wonderful in these pixs!
Marissa :-)
So, Grandpa, now that you have had some real face-to-face interaction (love that third pic!!), has she decided what name is appropriate for you? Did she tell you your name in language only her grandpa could understand? Such a special moment for both of you..and especially when it was a wondrous surprise!
It was so great meeting you and your beautiful wife! Thank you for stopping by my room and praying with me. I can't tell you how much it meant to me.
I love the pictures! What a blessing you have there.
Treasure these moments. Sadly, my mom an dad never got to hold our baby, who passed away on Nov 07 after being born 16 weeks early.
God bless you and your family!
Great pictures. What a blessing for you to hold your little miracle. Praise be to God.

Were you surprised at how much life could be packed into such a tiny one? Or at how featherlight she was? I can't imagine...what a priceless moment to be able to hold her.
I'm a mommy of eight children, and holding each one for the first time was amazing. I DO imagine that holding your granddaughter after all of this time was awe inspiring and a real answer to prayer. I am praying that you will be able to joyously experience each step of her life.
What a neat post Rick. I bet you were so excited. I am excited for you.
Enjoy these times, and you and Gail have a safe trip back home.
Yeah for Grandpa!
I think you look like a "Pa Paw"
Pa Paw Rick. :D
a in Pa like apple
Here's the dilemma:
Gwyneth's other grandfather already has about 40 grandkids who call him Pop Pop, which likely would have been my first choice, since it runs in my family, too.
But I don't want to confuse the girl by having two Pop Pops, and asking Don's 47 grandkids (the numbers seem to grow as I write) to call him something new isn't feasable, so I'm open to whatever she wants to call me. Gwyneth gets to pick my new identity. Of course, that could be scary.
Jeepers, creepers; just look at those peepers... looking at you.JOY!!!
These pictures just brought tears to my eyes! So precious. My DJ just looked and said ooo look momma that baby Gwyneth is with her papa. :)
I think it says how much I have been reading and praying and sharing with my kids when the 3 year old knows a picture of Gwyneth, without me telling him who it is. ;)
I remember how that first "hold" feels, but for you even more special. Congratulations. Grandparent love is definitely extra special. Whatever she chooses to call you, will be ok with you, I'm sure. Gwyneth's beautiful "great Aunt Donna".
