Read the story here. A church sponsored rock concert ended up not so holy.
I'm all about churches being relevant in their methodology. Our message, if it is the Bible and Gospel, is already the most relevant Word on the street. Being relevant is one of my church's values.
But it's almost as though some churches are out to see how far and to what extreme they can go under the guise of "outreach". Everyone wants to be the hippest church around, it seems. The danger is when the lines are not only blurred, they're erased.
I can see Jesus entering alot of environs to interact and make a difference. That's what He did. I just can't see Jesus moshing at a concert by Killwhitneydead (described on its MySpace page as "metal/hardcore/death metal."). Can you?
BTW, I just went to their MySpace page. There's vocalist Matt giving me the finger and a promo graphic for a concert that says "Incest is Best". Listening to the lyrics being played I'm hearing the f-word and, well, you get the picture.
And a "church" wants to sponsor them in a concert in VA Beach? Hello?
You can't see me, but I'm shaking my head in bewilderment. I feel depressed.
Please, someone. Grab the envelope and pull it back.

There seems to me to be a serious lack of judgment on the part of the church for even choosing a band with the word "Kill" in its name. And did you see what one commenter point out? If you remove the "n" in that bands name what you get? It doesn't take a college, or even a high school education, to figure that one out.
By the way, I'm not a member of your church, or even consider myself a member of any one church, but I do like your posts. I like what you wrote about tolerance as well. I just didn't comment on that post as I'm a serial lurker. LOL.
Keep up the great message.
I agree with you in so many ways in this post (and many others). Wow, that's all I can say right now is just, wow!
Like the post above me I visit often but I don't comment a lot. However, I am a member to a church. My dad's church.
Keep preaching the wonderful word of GOD!
Like so many times - sadly to say- what may have started as a good idea has been taken to extreme.
There is a lot to say about balance and choices in everything.
"Our message, if it is the Bible and Gospel, is already the most relevant Word on the street."
I was beginning to think that I was the only one who thought this...glad that I'm not.
I can imagine the discussion in the living room.
15 year old daughter - "Mom can I go to the concert? It's a church thing."
Mom - "Will there be adults there?"
Daughter - "Yes (20 something old boys)"
Parents be your kid's filter, please. Know where they are going and what exactly is going on there.
Wow,thank you for that! just to let you know there is a church in california that believes exactly what you have been posting here! great, great posts!
Oh boy, just read the article. You know there is usually a place where you just have to draw the line.
Wow, I am from the area and missed that one in the news. As a Youth Advisor at our church and one that helps choose a lot of the events we attend I have had to do "research" before we send our kids to stuff. Sad to say especially when its events sponsored by a church. But a sign of the times.
