Chocolate Covered Bananas

Saturday my friends and I took a drive to Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA. It's one of the most exclusive places to live in Orange County - maybe the most exclusive. So it's cool to walk around the village and see a lot of interesting homes crammed into a small space.

But the best part about going to Balboa is stopping to get a frozen chocolate covered banana. Dad's (in the pic) is the place I recommend. I had mine rolled in peanuts. Man, they're good. Really good. Sinfully good.

I wonder why Balboa seems to be the only place I've ever found them?
Since I couldn't bring one home for Gail, I did manage a box of See's Chocolates for her.

Rick,

I will make you one. I used to make them at Dave's Ice Cream on Maui. It ain't rocket science.

Shove a popsicle in a banana. Freeze it. Dip it in the magic shell type chocolate, roll it in nuts. Voila! You got it!!

Hi Mr Lawrenson-

My name is Melinda, and I came to your blog -as so many others- from Nate's. I don't know any of you, but I am blessed to be following along on this incredible journey; standing with you all, and believing for God's best!

I am also a 'transplanted' Southern Californian. I grew up in "The Valley" (Reseda High School'84) and my closest friend is from the city of Orange! Small world!

All this background to ask: Do you remember the frozen bananas they had at Busch Gardens in the 70's? They were AWESOME!

Know too- I am considered a"foodie" amongst my friends- not unlike you- and Andy, I would imagine! I completely believe that not all frozen bananas or _______ (fill in the blank) are created equal!

As an example I'll just let you know: Sonic is the only place I have found a good cherry limeade on the left coast...

Blessings!

Hi Melinda,
Andy would be offended that you put me in the same group as he when it comes to food.

My only frozen banana frame of reference is Balboa Island. I've never had one elsewhere.

Thanks for joining in this enlightened conversation from northern CA.

Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas are all over Disney World parks in Florida. I remember them when I was a kid and loved them. Each time I've been back (especially this past December) - I think I had one every day. Love 'em! I also have a good recipe for them and have made them at home before.

You can get a frozen banana at Disney World at just about any ice cream stand! Sounds like a perfect reason for you to plan a trip to Disney!

I guess you have to be careful where you step. That's got to be messy as warm as it is down there.

Well, that too - they are all over the ground too :) They are mighty popular that's for sure.

Hi Again Mr Lawrenson-

Back for more enlightenment re: bananas, chocolate, and stuff.

Have you ever had Helen Grace Chocolates? They are famous for their chocolate covered strawberries. MMMMMM!

If so, what's your take on HG vs. See's? IMHO, Helen Grace's is sweeter and richer, and their dark chocolate is "chocolaty-er" than See's.

My twin sis managed the Woodland Hills HG store; I think chocolate was all I ate from 1985-1989...

Mr Lawrenson-

I can vouch for you. I have had the chocolate covered bananas at Laguna Beach. They are sometimes called Laguna Bars. And they are Amazing. And they don't compare to anywhere else.
I have had the ones in Disney World. And those don't compare! I have had the one's at Dad's. And there is another place I had them, but I don't remember the name. Both places were good! It's making me hungry!!
I've spent the past few days reading all of Nate's entries, and now I'm reading all of yours! I am catching up. Thank you for your words. I have been blessed by them!
