A Wasted Vote?

Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost." -- John Quincy Adams

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum aren't our only choices.

Thank you, I've also decided that I can't in good concience vote for either of the biggee's and was getting irritated at the "wasted vote" comment.

I find it personally hypocritical that we pastors tell folks to vote based on certain values. Then in the next breath we say "I don't like either of them, so I'm choosing the lesser of two evils", violating principle.

Why choose evil, regardless of its level? Shouldn't we vote on principle and let God sort it out?

The following is an article a friend of mine wrote regarding teh election... thought you would find it interesteing... it can be found here http://www.grpc.org/announcements/RP-10-23-08.pdf on page three) As the markets tumble all around the world and our leader’s great
solutions seem to be socializing everything they can get their hands on -
many Christians are completely turned off as to the Presidential choices this
election, to the point of making the decision NOT to vote
at all. Whether it’s Obama or McCain, Christians need to
make a decision for the love of their neighbor, as to which
of the two men will do less damage while in office.
Consider this quote:
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for
good men to do nothing."
- Edmund Burke (1729-1797)
If we allow a person to come to power by our inaction and our neighbor suffers harm, how is
it that we are not guilty of evil ourselves? To pick the lesser of two evils is not an evil choice at all
- in fact it is good.
In the movie Sophie’s choice, Sophie - with her two children - is confronted by a German
officer while being held in a Nazi concentration camp. She is forced to make a decision concerning
her two children - “Pick one!” - The officer demands. At first she is stunned and overwhelmed at
the thought. The officer then offers a consequence - “Choose one or they both will go!” Only at
that threat was Sophie able to make her choice. No person should ever have to be put to such a task.
She was directed to pick which child she wanted to live and which one must die. If she could not
choose, they both would die. Her actions resulted in life for one, and death for the other.
The decision was an act of love, it was good. The evil situation was nothing of her doing and
falls directly on the shoulders of the Nazi.
I don’t want to make it seem like choosing between a Democrat and a Republican is equal to
Sophie’s dilemma or that the Senators are both evil. I do wish to make this point however; As
Christians we are called to make a moral impact in this world (Salt and light). The failure of the
Republican candidate means the success of the Democratic candidate and vice versa. This is just
cause and effect and moral reasoning. If you think one of those people will cause more suffering
for your purposes and the things you care about, then you have a moral obligation to do something,
even though the better choice is not your ideal candidate.
If we decide to sit by and do nothing, the very things we have fought so hard against for so
many years will become the norm of tomorrow and we will have done nothing to have stopped it.
Millions of Christians will sit this election out. If we
made our voice clear, we could have a real impact on
our government. But not to vote is a shame.

I hope everyone will vote!
However, if we keep voting for bad policies put out by power hungry parties that's all we'll ever get.

Either way, we'll get what we deserve! And God's will shall prevail.

Why is it always assumed that Christians can't vote for Democrats? There is little I have seen in the McCain-Palin campaign that demonstrates to me they are the Compassionate Conservative, Religious Right. I see more compassion, more concern about the lives of Americans and in doing the right thing from Obama than I do McCain.

Rick Lawrenson said...

Since you asked, I'll give you the talking point answer to that question.

It's because Democrats continue to uphold Roe v. Wade in their party platform and are liberal in their views regarding the definition of family and marriage.

Conservative Christians find great disagreement there. For them, those are the sticking points. All other issues are secondary.

Rick Lawrenson said...

...and McCain and Palin are consistently pro-life and pro-traditional family. Obama and Biden are not.

So, many Conservative Christians are willing to look the other way on other "social" issues.

I thought long and hard about not voting this election until a friend sent me this preachers article...

So, does God care about who his children vote for? In many cases, with not much difference between them, I doubt it. But here's what he says about the needy and afflicted who have no one to help them and are on the brink of death:

"For God will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight." (Psalm 72:12-14)

The blood of weak and needy unborn children is precious in God’s sight. Please don't tell me abortion isn't the only issue. Of course it isn't. Treatment of the Jews wasn’t the only issue in 1940 Germany. Buying, selling and owning black people wasn’t the only issue in the United States of 1850. Nonetheless, both were the dominant moral issues of their day. Make no mistake about it. In our own day if we support a candidate who defends abortion, who is dedicated to that cause, we are supporting the killing of children. Yes, even if he’s the coolest candidate to come along in decades.

We will stand before the judgment seat of Christ for our decisions, and a vote is a decision in which we assume responsibility for the known beliefs and moral positions of the candidate.

Here's the link to the whole article if anyone wants to take a look at it...

Sure it would be great to be able to vote on principle, BUT if we do that then we will be opening the door for more innocent babies to suffer. Someone has to stand up and be their voice and I think God would want us to do nothing less. Someday we will stand in front of Him and have to answer for the things we did or did not vote for. Did our choice, even if not for a perfect candidate, please God or make him weep? I personally feel that God demands us to stand up for his innocent little ones....it's not something that we can leave for him to sort out.

So, if a person supports and votes for Obama no one here would consider then Christian? This is a very slippery slope, guys.

@ Jeffrey and Allison Tomasek

Actually, having carefully read over every comment, so far, you're the only one who has made that assumption: "Why is it always assumed that Christians can't vote for Democrats?"

How did you wrangle that one? Is this your pre-supposition? I don't think that has been voiced by any commentator so far on this thread, and if it were I'd shoot it down in a heartbeat.

Please vote God's Values for the sake of generations to come. If we vote for candidates that stand for Life, Not Death (Abortion, Murder), God Will Take Care of the Rest! This election is critical. It has nothing to do with What Party Hat you Wear! Just vote the Bible. God has been patient with us and our country. We know He Loves US...It's Time to Show Him We Love Him....Use Wisdom and Vote!

@ Seek Wisdom,
So you're OK with a vote for Chuck Baldwin and the Constitution Party? He has a pro-life platform.

Is that what you're saying?
