Hide your hard earned dollars somewhere.

Barack Obama told a tax-burdened plumber over the weekend that his economic philosophy is to "spread the wealth around".

Spread whose wealth? That's my question, sir.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain argued on Wednesday the U.S. government should take up his $300 billion plan to buy troubled mortgages in order to put an end to a protracted housing crisis.

And from where will Uncle Sam get that 300 billion? You get 3 guesses and the first two don't count.

It sounds to me like whichever one wins, a revisionist Robin Hood is coming to Washington. Our pockets are about to be picked by the Merry Men (and women) of Capitol Hill. You and I who have worked hard for whatever "wealth" we have are getting ready to part with more of it. Or do the candidates have another way for the Fed to come up with funds? If so, please share it with us.

(Note that I am fair and balanced.)

Remember capitalism?

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't I read somewhere today that, ironically, Joe Plumber owed back taxes?

Our choices this year are Socialism (lite - sweetened with splenda) and Marxism.

Unbelievable! It doesn't even sound like America anymore.

So pathetic! If only we could get them to read our constitution. And maybe repeal the 16th,17th and 26th amendments. Oh well.

The Constitution....
Is that the document that gives every American the right to own a home; have government provided health care....?

Nope, that would be the Communist Manifesto!

It appears that maybe "Joe the Plumber" is not a plumber after all! It also appears that "Joe" has been cheating you and me by not paying taxes for awhile. It will be interesting to see if this is played out in full view of the press. Most often, more than not, Little sympathy sound bites like this get tossed out in hopes of having a big impact in making people feel sorry for something, someone, or a cause. Most of the time, more often than not, they turn out to be false.

(just a thought)

Well, our Declaration of Independence proclaims our right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," so I would say, like Mr Obama, that health care is indeed a right. I would gladly pay more taxes (seriously) to ensure that everyone has access to good health care. What does the "right to life" mean after all if our government fails to guarantee it? As it stands, we pay at least twice per capita on health care than any developed country...and we're 40th in life expectancy.

Rick Lawrenson said...

That's quite a stretch from "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" to guaranteed health care!

The government protecting life is a far cry from socialized medicine.

If, indeed, that's what the Founding Fathers meant by that phrase, why then did they not work to guarantee it? Most of these same guys were involved with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, yet they made no mention of the gov't. providing health care.

You have to wonder why not if that's what they meant.

If your family makes $250,000 or less, Obama will not raise your taxes. Not your income tax. Not your payroll tax, not your capital gains tax. Not any tax. If you are infact one of the top 5%, than I think you can afford to pay a little more in taxes. I'm curious how that is Socialism...

Maybe I'm ignorant, but I don't think socialism necessarily has anything to do with raising or lowering taxes.

It's the philosophy that says government should provide everything for me rather than a free enterprise capitalism.

We're seeing a transition to socialism right in front of our eyes as our government gets into the banking business.

And since you raised the issue of taxes, I'm curious as to why anyone should pay a higher proportion of their income in taxes. I make far less than $250K annually. But why should someone who does pay more (or less) of a percentage than me? Shouldn't taxation be equal across the board? I mean, if we truly want equality.

It's interesting that on tonight's 60 Minutes on CBS this same question about socialism is being addressed.

The CEO of Bank of America (now partially owned by the US Government) is asked: "Is this socialism?" His reply: "I don't know what we'll call it, but it is different".

A rose by any other name...

Rick,
I'll just add that I couldn't agree with you more! I have a child whose medical condition demands good healthcare (well, actually I have three other children who are just as entitled to good healthcare), but I certainly don't want the government in charge of that healthcare.

I wish I lived closer to your church (it's not a short drive from AZ :-) I think I would enjoy hearing your words every Sunday.

Keep up the good work.
Ann

Terry,
Joe the Plumber doesn't concern me.

What concerns me is the concept of "sharing the wealth" by robbing from the hard working to give to the "entitled".
