All nighter continued

At 12:40AM I went back to spend time with Gwyneth. Her nurse was glad to see me because she was holding her and apparently the nurses here have spoiled her to the point that if she put her down she would start crying. So I arrived just in time.

For the next hour she slept while I held her watching her make faces. From the sounds I heard and rumbles I felt she also made some feces.

A few times she peeked at me, but really just wanted to sleep. After an hour I surrendered her. (She was getting a little cranky - probably needed that diaper changed.) And I knew Don was likely just arriving and would want to change it.

While he was coming in Don did hear from an anesthegiologist that Tricia was doing great.

More later!

wow you guys are lucky that the nurses are letting you all in to spend so much time with baby Gwyneth tonight. When our son was in the NICU, the staff actually discouraged us from holding and "overstimulating" him too much, so as to avoid him from burning too many calories. They certainly did not allow multiple family members to come in the NICU to hold the baby all night long..You guys are so lucky there at the DUKE NICU. It sounds like a wonderful place! We are still praying for Tricia's surgery to go smoothly as well as for the donor's family for their painful loss and wonderful gift of life to another. Try to get some rest tonight, even if you guys nap in shifts!

Except for the two hours a day when the nurses change shifts we (parents and grandparents) actually have 24 hour access to her every day. They're great here at Duke.

Earlier when she wasn't gaining weight they did discourage holding her for the same reason you mentioned.

So generous of you to spend an entire hour working with Gwyneth to create the perfect diaper...and then sacrifice the pleasure of changing it to the other Grandpa waiting patiently! You are, indeed, a good man, Rick :)

Wonderful news from the anesthesiologist! They have actually been operationg for over six hours now...getting closer!

Praying as promised...now maybe try for another nap in a few minutes.
Are you all like looking at each other and saying, "is this for real?"
Chris Tomlin's "Indescribable" just started floating through my head: "Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God!"

Glad you, grandparents, got to hold and watch Gwyn! So sweet!

Funny about the 'diaper change'. ;-)

Also, glad you and your wife arrived to Duke safely.

Get some rest,
Marissa :-)

Sweet baby faces while the sleep are the best... they are so expressive. I am glad that you got to spend time with that beautiful little girl.

If you are gonna be a grandpa, you have to get the terminology right. Babies POOP, or GO POTTY. They do not make feces; adults do that. Not that "feces" isn't a perfectly good medical term, sorta like "void" or "micturate", and "defacate", but babies usually just pee and poop. Oh yeah, and if you want to refresh your diaper-changing skills, feel free to drop by the Nursery any Sunday morning...:)
